Columbus was the first European to visit the Cayman islands, he called the islands Tortugas, after the herds of turtles he found . For centuries, the turtles were a source of fresh meat and were hunted until their numbers dwindled. A later adventurer renamed the group Cayman - the Amerindian word for crocodile - many of which lived around Little Cayman.
